The Glasgow Gladiators Powerchair Football Club has received a donation of £1,000 from family housebuilder Mactaggart & Mickel Homes’ Building Communities Fund.

The club provides a fast-paced team sport for people of all ages in the Glasgow area who use a Powered Wheelchair.

Glasgow Gladiators Powerchair Football Club is a unique club that offers the opportunity for people with a variety of health conditions including Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy and Spina Bifida the chance to play, have a bit of freedom and fun, engage and socialize with their community and gain a sense of purpose and belonging.

The club was started and is run by the players themselves, with support from their parents, and currently has 13 team members. The much-needed donation will go towards increasing recruitment of both players and referees, with the aim to include as many participants as possible to the game who use a Powered Wheelchair. The support will also go towards some much-needed equipment, trophies and medals.

Mactaggart & Mickel Homes has a long history of supporting good causes. The Building Communities Fund was established to enhance the company’s ongoing efforts to help organisations and projects which enhance the lives of people within their local communities.

The fund is open throughout the year to applications from charities, community groups, sports teams and schools within a five mile radius of any Mactaggart & Mickel Homes development under construction, including Milverton Grange in Lower Whitecraigs, Giffnock.

Applications for funding are assessed and awarded by a cross section of Mactaggart & Mickel employees.

We were impressed that the club was founded and run by the players themselves and for us to be able to contribute to its growth and success is fantastic. My recent visit to their training session was really inspiring and it was great to see the energy and enthusiasm of all the players right from the off.”

Idrees Ahmed, a member of the Glasgow Gladiators Powerchair team, added: “I would like to thank Mactaggart & Mickel for helping us achieve our long term goal to create a Tournament based on equality and fairness, which will be called the Mactaggart & Mickel Magical Movement Tournament. This vital support will help us buy equipment for the Tournament and a Trophy and medals for everybody that takes part. We hope to recruit as many new participants as possible who use a Powered Wheelchair, no matter their ability, because equality is at the heart of everything we do.”
