Managing director celebrates 25 years at Clark Contracts

Clark Contracts’ managing director Gordon Cunningham is celebrating 25 years with the business and 20 years in the role.

Gordon began his career in 1988 at Doig and Smith where he trained for seven years, graduating in 1995 before moving on to a building contractor where he qualified as a chartered quantity surveyor in 1997.

Gordon joined Clark Contracts in 1999 as general manager of the Small Works Division, then progressed to deputy managing director in 2003 and then managing director in 2004.



Gordon has been instrumental in the growth of the company, and since his appointment as managing director, the business has grown to turnover more than £110 million in 2024, whilst increasing its geographic coverage and delivering projects throughout the UK.

With over 250 employees, Gordon has also been heavily involved in shaping the company’s people development strategy. Notably, Gordon led the formation of the company’s award-winning Academy in 2006 which currently has 41 trainees and apprentices enrolled and since being formed, has supported over 350 trainees and apprentices into the industry.

Gordon said: “Over my 25 years at Clark Contracts I have enjoyed watching both the business and employees grow and develop to where we are now. I can remember when we delivered our first £1m project, and now we are delivering projects upwards of £30m across all sectors and earlier this year featured as number 3 in Glenigan’s Top 10 Scottish Contractors industry report.

“Despite this growth, we remain dedicated to the delivery of smaller projects, from £10k, with our divisional structure allowing us to allocate project teams with the relevant expertise and capabilities.



“We have a strong belief in our Customers’ 1st initiative which seeks to continually improve the way all of our employees deal with our customers. This is shown in the longevity of our customer relationships, some of which we were working with when I joined back in 1999 such as the University of Glasgow, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow Caledonian University, and the NHS.

“We have great examples across the business of employees who joined our Academy as apprentices, trainees, college and university students and have progressed into senior management roles. More recently we have developed a leadership and development programme for future leaders of the business, to ensure the continued growth and stability of the business.”
