McTaggart construction achieves net zero targets
McTaggart Construction has completed the transition of all its offices to fully renewable energy as part of its drive for sustainability.
The move comes on top of an annual reduction in carbon emissions of 10% for the past four years.
Sustainability manager Loren Mowbray said: “We are fully committed to protecting the environment and are delighted by the progress we have made in our push for Net Zero across all areas of our award-winning business.
“All of our site teams are Site Environmental Awareness Training accredited, equating to over 140 staff, along with more than 500 staff engaged in environmental toolbox talks.”
The family-owned firm specialises in building quality affordable homes.
Managing director Janice Russell said: “As we develop on our sustainability journey we are guided by our core values: Listen, Build, Connect. By listening to our community and stakeholders, building low carbon sustainable homes and by connecting with our partners and clients, we adapt a collaborative approach which drives us towards a sustainable future.
“The house-building sector serves as a highly accessible and visible platform for such transformation and the work on each site and across our offices underlines our pro-active approach.”
McTaggart is currently achieving targets of zero waste going to landfill with more than 95% being re-used, recovered or recycled.
Ms Mowbray said: “We are constantly striving to exceed our accredited carbon reduction plan and work across all areas of the business to seek out opportunities for innovation to increase circularity, reduce emissions and prevent waste. Each year we are developing and strengthening the monitoring, measuring and measure of our activity.
“While the built environment consumes around half of the world resources, we are aware of the opportunities we can take to reduce our impact. Our commitment to reducing our impact branches further than just our business: we connect with our stakeholders to achieve combined ambitions and reduced impact and support the delivery of local and national targets on emission and waste reduction.”
McTaggart has committed to providing a minimum of 40% of all sub-contracting opportunities to local business on each project, with their recent developments at Irvine Harbourside, and Glenacre Drive and Petersburn Road in North Lanarkshire achieving 80% and 60% respectively.
In her role as sustainability manager Loren has worked with McTaggart Construction CSR manager Ross Hammell to develop a new net zero strategy and a socially responsible future in the construction sector.
Mr Hammel said: “That drive starts before we even get on site, as trials for new opportunities are being explored and prepared to be implemented and monitored through continuous collaboration and behavioural change.
“We invest heavily in training, workforce development and a sustainable supply chain to ensure everyone connected with McTaggart understands and plays their part in contributing to a brighter, more sustainable future.”
Ms Russell added: “A net zero future and more high-quality sustainability built low carbon homes offers abundant opportunities for the business, the environment and for occupants who benefit from low running costs and comfortable living spaces.
“The construction industry has a steep learning curve to support those ambitions, but with Ross and Loren’s expertise we have been able to drive positive change and achieve our sustainability goals.”
