McTaggart Construction has been named Business of the Year in the prestigious Scottish Women’s Awards 2023.

Managing director Janice Russell received the award for her and the family firm’s outstanding achievements.

The Dalry-based business, which builds quality affordable homes, has doubled turnover to more than £90 million in just over five years.

Mrs Russell said: “To even be nominated alongside so many fantastic women was an honour … but to actually win was one of the proudest moments of my life.

“The amazing success stories of all the winners and nominees, and their achievements across so many aspects of Scottish life, are an inspiration to all women. There is no limit to what we can achieve when we support and empower each other.”

Mrs Russell, who was also recently appointed to the board of Homes for Scotland, the body representing Scotland’s home building sector, added: “The construction industry has given me a platform to grow both as an individual and as a professional.

“I’m incredibly lucky to work for a senior management team, board, staff and business partners who judge you on your ability to deliver - not your gender.”

The winners of the Scottish Women’s Awards 2023, organised by Oceanic Events, were announced at a gala ceremony at the Glasgow Marriott Hotel on Saturday. The awards celebrate the remarkable impact women across Scotland are making in their respective industries and communities.

Mrs Russell took over the helm of McTaggart Construction earlier in the year following a management restructure. She said: “Leading a long-established family firm, is quite a responsibility, but having the family’s trust and faith in me and my team has helped us successfully drive the business forward.

“Every day we try to make a positive difference and change lives and communities for the better, whether it’s creating jobs or building homes that exceed expectations.

“And events such as the Scottish Women’s Awards also make a positive difference by recognising and celebrating women who are making their mark in
their respective industries and showing future generations what they too could achieve.”

McTaggart Construction was crowned Scotland’s large apprentice employer of the year in the 2023 Skills Development Scotland awards.

A spokesperson for The 5th Scottish Women’s Awards 2023 said: “The awards showcased the extraordinary talents and achievements of these women, highlighting their significant contributions to society.

“These winners represent not only excellence in their respective fields but also the qualities of determination, resilience, and a commitment to making a positive difference in the world.

“We congratulate all winners and nominees for their amazing achievements and we hope their success stories will inspire others to reach for excellence.”
