Newton Hut is a member of the Scottish Men’s Sheds Association which aims to ensure that all men in Scotland have access to opportunities for increased citizenship and community development to impact positively on their health, wellbeing and education of them and communities.

Shawfair LLP, the master planners behind the new town in Midlothian, works with a number of community groups based in and around the town and recently installed a new sign at Shawfair that names local community organisations.

Nick Waugh, director, Shawfair LLP, said: “It’s great that we’ve been able to support the valuable work of the Newton Hut. Community is at the heart of everything we do at Shawfair, so it’s important that as our new town continues to grow that communities get the chance to grow with it.”

Erika Pryde, mission and outreach worker, Church of Scotland, said: “Our project is for men who are lonely, isolated or suffering from mental health issues and provides a safe space to talk and share memories, skills and hobbies. The men that come to work with us enjoy the companionship it brings and it helps them combat the feeling of isolation.

“With this donation of soil from Shawfair, the group can press ahead with its plans to provide local families in need with the fresh produce they are able to grow.”
