Construction and infrastructure company Morgan Sindall hosted a group from The Association of Women in Property (WIP) on a tour of the £107 million Marischal Square development in Aberdeen.

Twenty women, including property lawyers, planners, architects and project managers, were given a tour of the landmark development which is set to transform the centre of Aberdeen.

Being delivered by urban regeneration specialists – and Morgan Sindall sister company – Muse Developments, Marischal Square is fully funded by Aviva Investors and will deliver a vibrant new mixed-use quarter for the city. It will include Grade A office space with associated car parking, a 4-star Residence Inn by Marriott, cafés, restaurants and civic space, along with public access, landscaping and public realm improvements. The site was previously dominated by the former Aberdeen City Council headquarters building, St. Nicholas House, which was demolished as part of the project.

Construction on the site started in the spring of 2015 and is on schedule to be completed in the summer of 2017.

Established in 1987, WIP is committed to increasing the number of women in the property industry and to ensuring that there are no glass ceilings impeding the progress of those already working in the sector. Although great strides have been made, female employees still account for only 15 percent of the workforce.

Audrey Gilmour, design manager at Morgan Sindall, who led the tour, said: “Construction work is progressing well atMarischal Square and we were delighted to give the members of WIP a tour of the site.

“At Morgan Sindall we’re committed to promoting and developing the best talent, regardless of gender, but the construction industry in general still has a way to go to redress the gender imbalance. The work that organisations like WIP are doing to ensure this happens is commendable.”

The tour follows last month’s successful Build UK ‘Open Doors’ event where school pupils and members of the public were invited to view the development as part of a wider project which aims to offer a behind-the-scenes look at sites and inspire the next generation of construction workers.
