Motherwell station redevelopment moves to third phase

The £14.5 million redevelopment of Motherwell station entered its third phase last week with a focus on the extension of the forecourt and internal concourse area at the station.

ScotRail said the work by Balfour Beatty will see changes to how customers access the station platforms for a short period of time.

While the finishing touches are applied to a new lounge area between platform 2 and 3, access to both of these platforms will be from the newly refurbished stairwell in the existing concourse area onto platform 3.

As part of the phase 3 concourse redevelopment works, the ticket office will be relocated to a temporary unit outside of the main station building to allow for work on the new larger concourse to take place.

Blue badge spaces will also be relocated to the Pollock Street car park adjacent to the GLO Centre, approximately 100m from the station.

Work on phase three is expected to last until Spring 2022.

As part of the project, North Lanarkshire Council will also be making improvements to Muir Street next to the station with support from the Glasgow City Region City Deal.

This will include an expanded bus facility, new station access road, car drop-off area and disabled parking, as well as improved facilities for taxis and pedestrian and cycle access. Planning permission has now been granted for these improvements.

Once complete the whole project will deliver:

  • An enhanced station forecourt and building with glazed roof and brighter, larger concourse.
  • Improved ticket retailing facilities.
  • Enhanced retail opportunities.
  • Upgraded staff facilities.
  • Refurbished customer toilets and waiting facilities.
  • Improvements to pedestrian and cycling access.
  • Improved rail/bus interchange on Muir Street.
  • New facilities for taxis, car drop-offs and disabled parking.

John MacDonald, ScotRail senior project manager, said: “Phase three of our redevelopment project will see some big changes for customers, who will soon be able enjoy the brand-new lounge area before they catch their train.

“In the meantime, access to platforms 2 and 3 will be different to what people will have become used to over the past year. Customers will now access platforms 2 and 3 using a stairwell within the station building. This is a return to the original passage through the station.

“We thank customers for their patience over the last year with the disruption caused during the Phase 2 platform level works.

“The redevelopment of Motherwell station will transform facilities for customers and open up a wealth of possibilities for Motherwell. It will create a gateway to Glasgow, and beyond; with more travel options, better connections and all in a low-carbon way.”
