Murrayfield thrill for rugby daft Caitlin

Kirriemuir youngster Caitlin Wilkie and charity fundraisers enjoyed a five-star welcome to BT Murrayfield Stadium thanks to an event backed by various businesses in the construction industry.

The Scottish Rugby Union rolled out the red carpet as a 14-strong team of cyclists embarked on the latest leg of the “Carry the Gene” relay from John O’Groats to the border with England.

With the final stage of the challenge lined up for this weekend - a 45-mile walk from Melrose - fundraising for the Bardet-Biedl Syndrome UK charity has already topped the £30,000 mark.

Despite being diagnosed with the little-known genetic condition which impacts her sight and weight, Caitlin, and her sister Naimh (5), are both keen members of Forfar-based Strathmore Rugby Club and play for the Strathie Sharks.

Parents Liam, a construction director with Tayside civil engineering firm Kilmac, and Thrums veterinary associate director Ashley regularly cheer on Scotland from the stands.

They have been thrilled with the support from the construction sector and the rugby community for the relay fundraiser and are counting down to the 12th and final leg.

Liam said Caitlin and Naimh enjoy rugby and the Strathmore club has thrown its weight behind the fundraiser.

Former Scotland captain John Barclay and fellow international Ben Cairns have also been very supportive.

“The girls were thrilled with the welcome to BT Murrayfield and the SRU have invited them back for the summer friendlies in the build-up to the World Cup. They are already hugely excited,” said Liam.

“The girls love their rugby and Strathmore are very inclusive. The coaches and players make Caitlin very welcome.

“The club, along with friends, colleagues and business contacts across the Scottish construction industry, have been hugely supportive and we can’t believe that we have raised more than £32,000 on JustGiving in advance of the final leg this weekend. It is incredible.”

The relay is being supported by main sponsor Delson Contracts of Kirriemuir.
