Angus Council’s policy and resources committee yesterday approved a two-year project for the replacement of the old care home, which is considered outdated and no longer suitable for the needs of the 13 adults who live there. The project has also been approved by Angus Integration Joint Board.

The new 21st century facility will be built within the grounds of the existing care home, off Arbroath Road. Residents will continue to live at the existing Gables and then transfer to the new supported housing development once it is complete. The old premises will then be demolished. The committee also approved the appointment of the preferred registered social landlord – Caledonia Housing Association - and the costs of delivering the project, as well as an agreement to transfer the land to the registered social landlord.

Quality of care, staffing and leadership at The Gables continues to attract high grades from the Care Inspectorate. But inspections have also highlighted a requirement for the existing building to be replaced to meet national care standards and to be consistent with Scottish Government strategy that favours greater independence and supported living, rather than traditional residential care.

Residents, their families and staff have been involved in the development of plans for the new Gables, by way of consultation, advice and information about the development, which will receive grant funding through the Scottish Government’s Affordable Housing Investment Programme.

The new accommodation will provide the environment for more personalised models of housing support and meet the needs of the existing residents and families in Forfar. The proposed project delivers 11 one-bedroom flats, one two-bedroom house, a communal lounge and staff accommodation. Six one/two-bedroom affordable homes will also be constructed within the existing grounds.

Work is scheduled to begin later this year, with the current residents moving into the attractive new building about 12 months later. Demolition of the old building and the building of affordable homes will then take place.
