New council homes completed on former demolition site in Airdrie
North Lanarkshire Council is marking another completion of one of its new council housing developments.
The 31 modern homes at Northburn Avenue and Northburn Place, Airdrie, are built on the site where 28 flats were demolished as part of the council’s re-provisioning programme.
This latest development, delivered by Hadden Group, comprises a mix of 1, 2 and 3-bedroom family homes and three wheelchair properties, and is part of the council’s ambitious new supply programme which aims to deliver 5,000 new homes by 2035. To date, it has delivered 1379 new homes and are on-site at eight other locations.
All the new homes are designed to Housing for Varying Needs standards, meaning they are adaptable to suit different tenants’ needs and are Secured by Design accredited. North Lanarkshire Council is also embracing renewable technologies ensuring its homes are highly energy efficient with properties at its latest development having access to EV charging capability.
Housing convener, Councillor Michael McPake, attended the completion event together with local elected members Councillors Sophia Coyle, Richard Sullivan and Henry Dunbar and representatives from North Lanarkshire Council and developer Hadden Group.
Councillor McPake said: “Our housing plans are significant and are already having a positive impact on the lives of our tenants and residents across North Lanarkshire’s communities. The transformation of this site is impressive. The older outdated former low-rise flats have been replaced with modern houses which are now providing homes that meet the needs of our tenants and their families, now and for the future.
“We’re continuing to roll out our housing plans which are not only changing lives and communities, but which are boosting the local economy and creating jobs. We’re determined to realise our ambition of making North Lanarkshire the place to live.”
The development is made up of 9 x 2-bedroom houses; 2 x 3-bedroom houses; 13 x 2-bedroom cottage flats; 3 x 2-bedroom wheelchair cottage flats and 4 x 1-bedroom cottage flats. It cost £6.037 million and was supported with Scottish Government grant funding of £1.829m.
Stephen Lynas, preconstruction & business development director, Hadden Group, added: “We’re pleased to mark the successful delivery of our third project with North Lanarkshire’s new council house building team. These new homes have been developed to a very high standard and I’m sure the new tenants will enjoy living here and taking advantage of lower energy bills due to their energy-efficient construction.”
