A potential new school campus for the north east of Dundee will be discussed at a meeting of the council’s education committee next week.

The proposal is to build a new campus setting to replace Longhaugh Nursery and Primary, alongside a merger of St Luke’s and St Matthew’s Primary with St Vincent’s Primary.

Education convener Councillor Stewart Hunter said: “This is an exciting proposal that will help to improve the education of children in the north east of the city for generations.

“The campus model is already working very successfully in both the West End and at Balgarthno.

“The education department has been considering very carefully how to make the best use of our school estate and this proposal shows a real sense of ambition.

“This plan is, of course, subject to the allocation of funding from the Scottish Futures Trust and to committee approval of financial considerations.

“We are showing, yet again how we are continuing to invest in the future of education across the city.

“The new Harris Academy is taking shape and there is progress on new primary schools for Menzieshill and Coldside, as well as replacements for Sidlaw View Primary and Baldragon Academy.

“Of course, consultation would be a key element in this latest proposal and I would hope that as many people as possible would take part.”

The campus plan is contained in a school estate review report that also puts forward a number of other proposals.

These are:

the closure of Menzieshill High School (including the redelineation of its existing catchment area within Dundee) to the new Harris Academy, and the redelineation of the existing catchment area for Rosebank Primary School to Morgan Academy in August 2016; the revision of catchment areas for Sidlaw View Primary School, Ardler Primary School, Downfield Primary School and Craigowl Primary School from August 2016; and the re-delineation of the existing catchment area for St Clement’s RC Primary School to make St John’s High School the associated secondary school from August 2016.

If the report is agreed on Monday (November 24) a further report would be brought back to the education committee in December outlining the relevant consultation paperwork.

The proposals would require formal consultation under the Schools (Consultation) (Scotland) Act 2010.
