New Possilpark homes opened by housing co-operative

Hawthorn Housing Co-operative has officially opened a development of 48 new homes in Possilpark.

The homes have been built on land that has been derelict for more than 30 years.
Bob Doris MSP and Cllr Kenny Mclean were on hand to recognise the role the Co-op, like other community-controlled housing landlords, has had in transforming many parts of the city.
Peter Kelly, asset manager for the Co-op, said: “The new homes we have provided shows that the Co-op is achieving its vision of ‘Leading the creation of a community with excellent homes where people are proud to live’.”

Chair Helen Graham added: “We are extremely proud of these new homes and the part they play in our long term project for improving the quality of life of this community and the homes they live in.”
The two-storey homes were traditionally built by McTaggart Construction through a design and build contract. The total cost of the project was £5.65 million and this was funded by £3.75m in housing association grant provided by Glasgow City Council and a £1.9m loan from the Bank of Scotland.

The development was self-financed through the rent it generates with each home costing the Co-op under £40,000. The primary aim of the Co-op was to ensure that the homes are easy to maintain in the future.
The Co-op received development services support from John Mulholland throughout the project.
