A meeting of West Lothian Council Education Executive approved plans to establish a new primary school in the Hawkhill area of Winchburgh.

A report presented to Education Executive outlined that further expansion of the learning estate was required with continued house building further increasing the number of primary school age children in the area.

The report outlined the statutory consultation process undertaken by West Lothian Council from April to June. The consultation sought views from the local community and stakeholders through a range of approaches including public meetings and an online survey.

The development of the new school is set to cost approximately £15.5 million and will fully funded by developer contributions. The new school is anticipated to open to pupils in August 2025.

Further details on the new school project were provided to a meeting of West Lothian Council Executive where an update was also provided on plans to progress an additional project at Winchburgh Primary School.

The estimated £3.7m extension will deliver a four-classroom extension and new hall facility located at the existing Winchburgh Primary School. The extension is also set to be solely funded from developer contributions.

This is the latest planned education investment in the area following on from the successful completion of the Winchburgh Schools Development that delivered two new secondary schools - Winchburgh Academy and Sinclair Academy - and a replacement for Holy Family Primary School.

Executive councillor for education, Andrew McGuire said: “Winchburgh is one of the fastest growing areas in West Lothian and has already seen a great investment towards the provision of a top-class learning estate. The delivery of these projects will enable the continued provision of high-quality facilities for the pupils, staff, stakeholders and the wider West Lothian community.”
