Architect Andrew Nicoll, who co-founded Broughty Ferry practice Nicoll Russell Studios, has died at the age of 76.

Born in Carnoustie in 1940, Mr Nicoll attended Arbroath High School and studied architecture at Duncan of Jordanstone in Dundee, before spending several years in London.

He formed Nicoll Russell Studios in 1982 with Richard Russell as a result of the successful completion of Dundee Repertory Theatre, a project which has recently been named one of the top ten Scottish buildings of the century.

Mr Nicoll was also representative for the north of Scotland at the Royal Institute of British Architects before his retirement.

Richard Russell told The Courier: “Andrew was very supportive of everyone around him.

“The practice benefited from the support and encouragement he gave to everyone.

“That The Rep is up for an award of building of the century speaks volumes of what we wanted to achieve as a practice.

“Andrew’s ethos of getting it right will live on at Nicoll Russell studios.”
