No half measures as Pacific Building powers ahead

Apex Hotel, Edinburgh

Pacific Building is powering ahead on numerous project fronts as the company marks the halfway point in a hugely successful 2024 so far.

In the hotel sector, major refurbishment programmes are underway at two landmark establishments in Edinburgh and St Andrews.

At the four-star Apex Hotel in the capital’s Waterloo Place, Pacific’s teams are delivering a comprehensive upgrade to public areas in the Georgian building that is situated a stone’s throw from Waverley Station.

The project involves a makeover and reconfiguration of the reception, bar and restaurants on a phased basis, with the hotel remaining operational throughout.

The scope of works includes floor coverings, crittall screens, building services, decoration, tiling and partitions as well as bespoke carpentry items (supplied by Pacific’s specialist in-house joinery facility) including bars, waiter stations, coffee servery and wall panels.

At St Andrews’ famous Seaton House in Fife – located on The Scores – the project involves the refurbishment of the existing building including major structural and services interventions.

The new hotel will incorporate 41 bedrooms as well as a new a la carte restaurant, bar and “light bites” cafe.

Both of these phased projects are due for completion later in the year and they come off the back of the successful delivery of three other refurbishment programmes in the capital city – the Mount Royal on Princes Street, the Marriott in Holyrood and the Holiday Inn Edinburgh Zoo – involving a total of more than 400 rooms.

Based in Hillington, on the outskirts of Glasgow, Pacific’s notable wins in the hotels sector have been achieved while continuing to nurture their longstanding relationships with major clients in the airports and food-and-drink sectors.

At Glasgow International Airport – where the company have delivered numerous projects over many years both landside and airside and where they have an operational base – work is getting underway on two new programmes.

These involve the creation of new corporate office facilities for both Emirates Airlines and Jet 2 – whose crew room was developed by Pacific a few years ago – as well as a new boardroom for the airport operators and an office for National Statistics.

Over at Edinburgh International Airport – where they have completed a raft of programmes over many years – the company have delivered a striking refresh to the BA lounge that involved more joinery creations from their specialist workshop, electrical installations, lighting, tiling doors and partitions.

In terms of food and drink, work has started on an all-new McDonald’s restaurant in Monifieth, near Dundee, that replaces the previous diner that was destroyed by fire.

Against this backdrop of increased workflow, Pacific has also been awarded a second Gold Award by The 5% Club of progressive employers who invest in inclusive workplace training, apprenticeships and graduate schemes.

From a membership list of 900 companies across the UK, Pacific was just one of the 120 employers who met the Gold criteria in the Club’s Employer Audit Scheme.

And as Pacific gears up to celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2025, managing director Gerard McMahon said: “We are in the middle of a truly exceptional year in which we seen significant growth and are looking forward to an even better one next year.

“Credit to all our teams who have helped us secure – and deliver – these latest projects for clients new to us as well as some old ‘friends’.

“The quality of our work and our roster of clients speaks volumes about our track record and our ambitions going forward.”

Among those helping Pacific gear up for their anniversary is joiner Willie Murphy – one of a number of long-serving employees – who recently celebrated 50 years in the industry.

Pacific became an employee-owned business in January, 2019, which means every staff member is a beneficiary of an Employee Ownership Trust, which owns Pacific Building Ltd on behalf of all employees now and in the future.
