Nominations open for 2025 RIAS elections

Nominations open for 2025 RIAS elections

The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) has opened the call for nominations for the 2025 elections – seeking the new RIAS president and three nationally elected trustees.

RIAS Chartered Members are invited to put themselves forward as candidates for either role, which both offer the chance to play an invaluable part in shaping the future of architecture in Scotland, and to make a difference in the profession. The RIAS is keen to encourage nominations from Chartered Members (current with an ARB registration, or retired) of all backgrounds, to reflect the diversity of voices and perspectives that make up the RIAS’ membership.

The RIAS President is one of the most important and exciting roles within the RIAS. As the Incorporation’s figurehead, the President leads the strategic direction of the RIAS, and its outreach - engaging with Members, government ministers and committees while working collaboratively with the RIAS staff team as well as other UK architectural institutes.

This is central to fostering the meaningful partnerships that shape and further the RIAS’ mission of championing architecture and promoting the value of well-designed places across Scotland. This role is for an architect with a clear understanding of the challenges the profession now faces and a strong, forward-thinking vision for the Incorporation’s ongoing development and growth.

Every candidate will need 10 proposers to support their nomination. Candidates then have the opportunity to set out their priorities and ambitions for presidency, as well as their relevant skills and expertise, in their election statement and video.

The successful candidate will step into the role of RIAS president-elect from 2025-2026, before taking over as president from 2026-2028. This provides greater continuity, with the president-elect supporting the sitting president for a year prior to taking up the role of president. This also gives incoming RIAS presidents additional time to prepare for their term, and familiarise themselves with the role’s governance, outreach and operational duties.

Nominations are also open for three nationally elected trustees. Comprising a three-year term, this role forms part of the RIAS’ revised governance structure and provides Chartered Members with the opportunity to share their expertise and advice on the new RIAS Board of Trustees. This includes working with the other Trustees to reach the goals and uphold the values of the RIAS.

The deadline for nominations for both roles, is 4pm on Mon 21 April 2025.

Karen Anderson, current RIAS president, said: “Being RIAS president is a great opportunity to work alongside the staff team, Chapters and volunteers in support of RIAS Members and to promote the importance of architecture in Scotland. I’d like to encourage all who feel passionately about the future of the profession to consider standing for President or the new Board, as in these challenging times it is a rewarding experience to work with others to make a difference.”
