Councillors heard this week that there remains scope for another 550 houses to be built at the site in Irvine, in addition to the 350 private and affordable homes already constructed.

And the council has vowed to invest around £1.62m – funded from land receipts - to enable the work to take place.

A masterplan for Montgomerie Park has been produced which identifies the need for an additional roundabout access on Long Drive, a spur road into the site and enhanced drainage.

The masterplan also puts an emphasis on safe travel throughout the site. The design will incorporate a primary route - capable of supporting buses - enabling the majority of houses to sit on quiet streets which will lead to less traffic with priority given to pedestrians.

The council’s investment will be recouped in time through land sales, and will make it easier to attract housebuilders to the area.

Councillor Marie Burns, cabinet member for economy and employment, said: “We have a clear vision for Irvine and are determined to make it a successful regional hub and attractive place to live.

“It’s therefore fantastic news that there is further scope for 550 good-quality homes within Montgomerie Park. This will make Irvine an even more attractive destination and attract new people and investment into the town.

“The Masterplan and proactive approach to enabling development on the site is extremely forward-thinking and those involved deserve enormous credit.

“It’s emphasis on safe travel and reducing traffic volume is fantastic news for families and will ensure Montgomerie Park is a popular place to live for years to come.”
