North East Scotland College unveils £64m campus redevelopment plans

North East Scotland College 2Proposals for a £65 million campus redevelopment plan have been launched by North East Scotland College.

Plans will include the refurbishment of Aberdeen City Campus and a new build at Aberdeen Altens Campus. Fraserburgh, where £8.5m worth of engineering technologies facilities will be ready for September 2016, and Peterhead (Scottish Maritime Academy), which recently had a £1m upgrade, will benefit from smaller projects.

Under the college’s ‘regional vision’ for the future, Aberdeen Gallowgate would benefit from £40m of investment including plans for the creation a new high street between the north and south blocks of the campus.

North East Scotland College 3The south block would be given new cladding and a new entrance in order to make it more attractive to people coming from the city centre.

The Altens campus has also been earmarked for improvements where £21.4m could be spent to create a new car park with 100 spaces alongside new facilities.

Elsewhere in the north-east, the Fraserburgh campus would be given a boost of £2.8m and the Peterhead one £400,000.

North East Scotland CollegePlans commenced earlier this year when BDP Architects were appointed by the college to conduct research to assess college estates as they currently stand and to make recommendations.

Currently under consultation, it’s hoped the plans will be presented to the college board in the middle of July before being sent to the city council later that month.

College principal Rob Wallen said the plan was an “ambitious” one to make the buildings more “flexible.”

He added: “This is an ambitious project which if approved, would transform the campus – particularly the south block.

“It will take buildings, built in the 60s and 70s, which have little flexibility and create a variety of different spaces.”

North East Scotland College 5Angela Taylor, convener of Aberdeen City council’s education committee, has welcomed the proposal.

She said: “The city campus vision aligns perfectly with the city centre masterplan which, through partnership working, will transform Aberdeen over the next 25 years.

“The refurbishment promises to deliver a top class learning environment for students and will strengthen bonds between the college and wider community.”
