North Lanarkshire Council seeks views on town hubs
Residents are being encouraged to have their say on proposals to create new town hubs across North Lanarkshire.
As part of a 10-year plan which will see investment of £3.5 billion, create thousands of new job opportunities and enhanced community facilities, a number of potential sites have been identified in Airdrie, Bellshill, Coatbridge, Cumbernauld, Kilsyth, Motherwell, Shotts and Wishaw for major town hub projects.
The town hubs are a significant part of North Lanarkshire Council’s vision ‘One Place, One Plan’ which will see community facilities such as leisure, services for older adults, retail opportunities and schools being brought together in one easily accessible, vibrant location. The council’s vision will also include the replacement of every school not replaced or remodelled since 1996.
Paul Kelly, depute leader of North Lanarkshire Council, said: “These plans will transform our towns and communities, facilities and services and help build an exciting new future. We want people in our communities to be able to access modern amenities and services from quality facilities within their towns.
“We have already made significant progress in working towards this vision and much work is already underway with the development of our town hubs being a crucial part of these plans. This vision will transform and reinvigorate our towns and bring substantial benefits across North Lanarkshire and to our people.
“We want these hubs to be built around our residents’ and what they want to see in their communities. It is vital we get as many opinions as possible about which sites can be best developed, so we can ensure they meet the needs of each town.”
Situated in the heart of communities, the town hubs will include partnership services such as health and police in addition to other council amenities people need to access.
The final decisions on potential sites will be made after the public consultation is completed.
