Persimmon donates 500 books to inspire primary pupils
Hundreds of primary pupils across West Lothian are receiving free copies of a new children’s book, thanks to a generous donation from Persimmon East Scotland.
The book, ‘Cones and Building Homes’, was commissioned by Persimmon Homes and written by author Chris Madeley. Part of a wider series, the story follows cones exploring the world around them. It aims to raise awareness of health and safety among children while introducing them to the construction industry and future career opportunities.
Councillor Andrew McGuire, West Lothian Council’s education spokesperson, joined Persimmon construction director Kevin Ferris, the headteacher, and pupils at East Calder Primary School to present the first copies of the book.
As one of West Lothian’s largest homebuilders, Persimmon will distribute the books to schools near its developments throughout the region.
Cllr Andrew McGuire, West Lothian Council’s education spokesperson, said: “It was fantastic of Persimmon to provide hundreds of primary school children across West Lothian with a free copy of Cones and Building Homes.
“To deliver the homes and buildings we need for the future, it’s vital to inspire young people to consider careers in the construction industry. I believe the Cones series is a fun and engaging way to introduce primary pupils to these opportunities while teaching them about the importance of safety on building sites.”
Neil Parry, Persimmon East Scotland managing director, said: “We’re delighted to support primary schools across West Lothian with this donation. The books are a fun way for young people to learn about the world of construction and the importance of safety.
“Hopefully, they will inspire some pupils to consider a career in construction in the future. We want to leave a positive legacy in the areas where we operate, and I want to thank West Lothian Council for helping us ensure these books reach as many local schools as possible.”
