Pupils and parents in Carnoustie are celebrating after Burnside Primary School was announced as one of Persimmon North Scotland’s Community Champions – and banked a bumper donation.

The funding will be used by the school to purchase new sports kits for pupils for a range of sports from football and basketball to golf and cross-country running.

Persimmon’s head of external affairs Gregor Scotland was joined by Councillor David Cheape to present staff and students with a cheque at the primary school.

The donation has been delivered through Persimmon’s Community Champions initiative, which supports charities and good causes in the areas the company operates. The programme has seen more than £350,000 donated across Scotland in the last five years.

Simon Corrie, acting deputy head teacher, Burnside Primary School, said: “We are delighted that Persimmon can support updating our sport kits. We really appreciate Persimmon’s aspirations to support local initiatives. Working together with local community and businesses is important to us.

“The children are excited to help pick the designs and wear these to our future tournaments.”

Local councillor, David Cheape, said: “It was a pleasure to be present at the cheque presentation from Persimmon North Scotland to Burnside Primary School. Their generous donation towards the purchase of new sports kits for a variety of school team sports was clearly welcomed by the school leadership team and pupils alike.

“I would welcome other local community groups to apply for financial assistance from Persimmon through their Community Champions fund if they have any projects that would fit Persimmon’s criteria for funding.”

James MacKay, Persimmon North Scotland managing director, said: “We’re delighted to support Burnside Primary School with their fundraising efforts for new sports kits.

“Our Community Champions scheme is all about supporting the communities we operate in and I hope the pupils are looking forward to picking out their new kits for the new year.”
