Perth voluntary group thanks Persimmon for new accessible minibus
A Perth and Kinross charity has unveiled a new accessible minibus, made possible by a £5,000 donation from Persimmon Homes North Scotland and contributions from other generous donors.
The minibus will support the Starfish Way programme, an initiative by the Perth and Kinross Duke of Edinburgh Award Association (PKDOE) that helps young people up to the age of 25 with additional support needs. Starfish Way focuses on mental health support, employability skills, independent living skills, and respite breaks, offering participants the chance to achieve over 10 accredited awards, including the Duke of Edinburgh Award, through adventurous, educational, physical, and skill-based activities.
To break down barriers to participation, the Association provides inclusive activities such as canoeing, climbing, bushcraft, and green woodworking. These take place in the therapeutic natural settings of Megginch Castle in Errol, Bamff Estate in Alyth, and Cultybraggan PoW Camp in Comrie, making reliable transport essential.
The new minibus, adapted to accommodate two wheelchair users, will allow the charity to transport more young people to these activities across Perth and Kinross, ensuring accessibility for all participants.
The purchase was made possible through Persimmon’s Community Champions scheme, which supports organisations that make a difference in their communities.
James MacKay, Persimmon North Scotland managing director, said: “We are delighted to see the Perth and Kinross Duke of Edinburgh Award Association put our donation to such good use. The new minibus will be a game-changer, helping more young people access the incredible activities and support this organisation provides.
“At Persimmon, we’re committed to leaving a lasting legacy in the communities we serve, and it’s fantastic to see this project come to fruition.”
Wendy Jackson, PKDOE fundraising and partnerships manager, said: “Funding from Persimmon’s Community Champions was critical in helping us purchase our minibus and we are incredibly grateful for their generous support.
“Having a minibus that can accommodate two wheelchairs has made all the difference for us and the young people we transport. We no longer have to make alternative arrangements for wheelchair users, allowing them to travel together and making our activities as inclusive as possible.”
Persimmon Homes’ Community Champions initiative has provided over £350,000 to charities and good causes across Scotland in the last five years.
