Plan for almost 600 Dundee homes backed for approval

Plans for 595 new homes to be built at the western edge of Dundee have been recommended for approval.

The proposals in the South Gray area were officially launched by Springfield Properties earlier this year, in two phases.

The first is for the construction of 365 homes and the second for another 230 dwellings.

It is believed construction will create more than 100 jobs and sustain hundreds of jobs over several years.

The Western Gateway has been earmarked for development for a number of years and councillors are set to meet next week, where they could rubber-stamp the development of the 47-acre site.

It follows a number of previous applications, relating to the creation of a village development, that all fell through.

A report to go in front of Dundee City Council’s development management committee on Monday recommends that the plans for “high-quality housing” be approved.

It states: “The principle of the development of a village in this area is long established and the proposals, in conjunction with another application elsewhere on this agenda, will deliver a high-quality housing choice with appropriate community facilities.

“The proposals do not fully comply with the Dundee Local Development Plan 2014 and there are material considerations to justify approval of the application.

“The application is therefore recommended for approval subject to conditions.

“A legal agreement relating to the provision of associated infrastructure and education will require to be concluded prior to the issuing of a decision.”

The homes, set to be a mix of villas and high-end multi-bedroom flats and houses, will be built with a commercial area that will host shops, offices, a nursery, cafe, village hall and a green.

Sandy Adam, Springfield’s chairman, said: “This is a wonderful site and one we are very excited about.

“Dundee has undergone an exciting transformation over the years — you just need to look at the waterfront to see that.

“A site like this doesn’t come up often. It offers homes in the countryside, coupled with excellent transport links to the whole of Scotland and quick access to the city centre.”
