Plan for urban retail village at Aberdeen’s Broadford Works site

Plans to build a new urban village of almost 900 units on the site of a derelict Aberdeen factory have been lodged.

A proposal of application notice has been submitted to Aberdeen City Council for the redevelopment of the former Broadford Works.

The proposal submitted by Ferness Investment Holdings Limited includes developing an urban village of about 890 units including private apartments and student residential bed spaces.

The plans also involve the creation of a nursery, restaurant, cafe and bar facilities, a small office and retail space.

The site, which is owned by businessman Ian Suttie, already has planning permission for more than 500 flats, 50,000sq ft of commercial space, a restaurant, nursery and parking.

Demolition workers moved on site last month to flatten the existing buildings on behalf of Mr Suttie.

The works, which started on Monday, October 26, are expected to take around 24 weeks to complete.

Convener of the planning development management committee Councillor Ramsay Milne said he is pleased to see an application come forward from a developer.

He added: “I cannot of course prejudge the quality of the application.

“I will look forward to the pre-application hearing when members will be able to question the developer and set out their perspective of the proposals.”

A spokesman for Ferness Investment Holdings Ltd said: “It’s going to be a mixed-use scheme, but a residential-led urban village. I know this site has been a particular interest for locals, and it’s going to be a pretty substantial site.”
