Planned incinerator ‘could help to heat new Dundee homes’
Plans for a new waste incinerator which could help to heat homes and businesses have been submitted to Dundee City Council.
The proposals from MVV Environment Services Ltd, which intends to take over the running of the site from the council-owned firm DERL, would see a new energy-from-waste facility built next to the existing incinerator at Baldovie.
In a statement, MVV revealed some of the potential benefits of the new development, which will handle waste from Dundee and Angus.
The statement said: “The facility will generate renewable energy sufficient to power and heat the adjacent Michelin facility, and replace the existing fossil fuel powered boilers and reduce the importation of natural gas and fossil fuel generated electricity.
“The heat could also be used by new and existing housing and industry in the area if there is surplus heat after supplying Michelin.
“If a heat distribution network was to be built it could be used to provide heat to the proposed housing in Whitfield.”
MVV says the facility would deliver “leading-edge energy generation technology, which will very efficiently convert waste that is not recycled, reused or composted into energy”.
The firm also says the incinerator would be “more efficient and reliable” than the existing one, and would operate via a partnership with the city council and Angus Council — handling 110,000 tonnes of waste every year.
The development would help the councils achieve their recycling targets, according to the statement.
Meanwhile, MVV says the new building would be “similar in size and mass to the existing structures on Forties Road and will be clad in a grey proprietary finish to match the existing buildings”.
The council will decide on the application in due course.
