Plans approved for new Gaelic school on Skye
An £8 million Gaelic primary school is set to be built in Portree on Skye after councillors gave planning permission for the development.
The cost includes the demolition of the Margaret Carnegie Hostel and Boys Hostel which will make way for the new building.
The Scottish Government awarded the Highland Council £3m towards the price in 2013.
There had been objections that the Carnegie Hostel was of historical significance, and that the £8m could be better spent on other island schools.
Described as a “large contemporary school”, the development is expected to open to pupils in 2017.
