City planners have agreed plans to transform the former St James Primary School building at Green Street, Calton.
Accommodation will include 14 classrooms in the original building with an extension housing a two-court multi-purpose hall, a kitchen and a drama and performance classroom.
In their decision report, officials stated: “The proposal would salvage a substantial listed building which is one of the remaining pieces of cultural heritage of the Calton area and would make use of a prominent brownfield site that had fallen into significant disrepair.
“The proposed extension is located to the side, away from the principle elevations, unashamedly modern with a glazed link to step away from the original building.
“The materials are proposed to be predominately a warm soft toned red brick. The proposed extension is subservient to the original building and its location, design, scale and proportions protect the building’s appearance, character and setting.”
Passivhaus retrofit specialists John Gilbert Architects and Narro are assisting with the build.
