Plans for £15.1 million educational campus in Renton unveiled

The campus, which will be built on the current grounds of the school, will include a new Renton Primary School, a new Language and Communication Unit and a new Riverside Early Learning and Childcare Centre.

The plans incorporate a new three-storey building to allow more open space for children to play outside with classrooms and links to outdoor space constructed on each floor. Two rooms on each level of the campus will be dedicated to pupils within the Language and Communications Unit.

In addition, a new multi-use sports pitch and playground area will be built on the site of the current school which will be demolished once the new building is complete.

Materials used in the construction will be carefully considered to enhance the regeneration of the village and blend in with the Category ‘A’ listed Smollet Monument and the ’B’ listed War Memorial situated close to the site.

Careful consideration has been given to traffic and parking around the new campus with plans to introduce a one-way drop-off zone entering at Station Street, exiting at Back Street. The proposals include a total of 68 designated parking spaces within the site for the new campus, six of these being accessible bays.

Residents have been invited to provide feedback on the plans before the planning application is submitted in the coming weeks.

Councillor Karen Conaghan, education convener at West Dunbartonshire Council, said: “These exciting proposals will provide hundreds of pupils with a modern purpose-built learning environment and clear educational benefits. The plans will also increase the number of places for children with additional support needs. Officers have also considered the size of the building to ensure we build a campus that will meet the future needs of the area.

“As a council we are committed to investing in our young people by enhancing educational facilities and in turn increasing opportunities to attain and achieve and these plans help us deliver on these ambitions. I hope as many people as possible will come and view the plans and take the opportunity to offer their feedback.”

Councillor Ian Dickson, vice convener of Education, said: “This is an exciting opportunity to transform the education of our current pupils by moving them from an ageing building that is in a poor condition to a brand new purpose-built learning environment.

“The announcement of this new build was welcomed by parents and carers and I would encourage them and other residents take this opportunity to view the proposed design of the building and grounds and let us know what they think.”
