Plans lodged for Kilwinning battery energy storage facility
Plans have been submitted for a new battery energy storage system (BESS) facility in Kilwinning.
Renewable energy company Apatura is seeking planning approval to construct and operate a 100 MW BESS with associated infrastructure and landscaping within a field just off the B778 Old Glasgow Road.
The proposed development would comprise a number of containerised units to house the BESS and associated ancillary infrastructure. Each container will have the appearance of a standard metal ISO/shipping container, sensitively and visually tailored through design to blend into its located environment.
The land spans over 3.28 hectares and is currently subject to an Environmental Impact Assessment screening.
This area was identified for the development due to its proximity to a grid connection point while remaining far removed from many residential properties.
The facility, if approved, would provide space for the storage of up to 100 megawatts of energy to assist the National Grid in increasing resilience and reducing reliance on imported gas.
