Plans submitted for serviced apartments conversion in Glasgow city centre

Glasgow City Council has received plans to convert the floors of historic city centre buildings into a large serviced apartment complex.

Change-of-use and listed building permission is being sought in relation to the Category B and C Listed former Cleland Testimonial building, George Hotel and Commercial Hotel buildings on the corner of Bath Street, Buchanan Street and Sauchiehall Street.

If approved, seventy-four serviced apartments would be created.

A design document submitted with the application reads: “The proposals will convert the upper floors which are currently vacant retail and restaurant space to an exciting new business offering 74 serviced apartments.

“The property will operate much like a hotel; the main difference being that small kitchen and dining areas are provided within the apartments so that guests can treat the apartments effectively as self-catering type accommodation while visiting the city.”

The apartments would be arranged around the perimeter of the building on the upper levels.

Changes to the heritage or listed parts of the property would be minimal and limited to opening up an original entrance on Bath Street to provide access.

The application is pending assessment by council planners, reGlasgow reports.
