The development would be built on the site of the B-listed Burnside Mill in Lochee, which has lain empty for decades. It would comprise of one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments for social rent.

The site, which is now owned by Hillcrest, was originally part of a jute complex dating back to the 1830s.

The section of the site to be converted was last used as the former Polysport sports hall but this closed over 20 years ago, The Courier reports.

Several planning applications have been submitted over the past few decades, hoping to renovate the site, yet plans never come to fruition.

The last proposal submitted, also by AG Akermo, intended to convert the building into 39 flats and was approved in 2018 but no building work was carried out. The development would have seen 39 two and three-bedroom units with combined kitchen living rooms created.

Angela Linton, Hillcrest’s chief executive, said: “We’re delighted to be working in partnership with G Paterson Architect and developer AG Akermo to undertake an exciting development of 69 affordable homes in the historic Burnside Mill.

“These good quality, energy efficient apartments will provide a fantastic boost to Dundee’s affordable housing provision while giving tenants a home they can be proud of, steeped in history and character.”

An all-day community consultation event will take place on February 26 from 11am at Lochee Community Hub, Lochee High Street where members of the public will be able to view the plans and speak with representatives from Hillcrest.
