Plans to invest millions in West Dunbartonshire sports facilities and play parks
Councillors are to consider proposals to invest in creating new sport facilities across West Dunbartonshire.
The plans include developing an all-weather athletics facility, football park and changing rooms at Posties Park in Dumbarton and the creation of a new synthetic pitch, pavilion and skate park at Whitecrook in Clydebank.
The £1.65 million Posties Park project would include a six-lane all-weather athletics track for use by schools and local clubs, with a grass football pitch constructed in the middle of the track and purpose built changing facilities. An option to include a replacement for Marine Craft Weightlifting gym will also be considered.
The £2.1m proposal for Whitecrook is being developed jointly with Clydebank Sports Hub and includes developing a synthetic pitch for rugby, Gaelic football and football and upgrading the pavilion to improve changing and community facilities. If the plan is approved, the site could be considered as a focal point for Gaelic sports in Scotland. A separate project is being brought forward to create a skate park and community allotments on the site off Dean Street.
Proposals to enhance parks across the area will also be presented to West Dunbartonshire Council’s infrastructure and regeneration committee. The plans include installing outdoor gym equipment on Dumbarton Common a number of parks and creating new play areas in Haldane, new Bonhill and Old Kilpatrick. The work would be funded from the £1.75m Community Capital Fund which has delivered improvements to a number of outdoor spaces including drainage works at Moss o’Balloch Park and a new play area in Faifley.
The committee will be asked to agree the proposals on Wednesday, 16 September.
Ronnie Dinnie, head of neighbourhood services at the council, said: “Extensive work has been completed to regenerate outdoor areas and increase opportunities for sport and play in West Dunbartonshire while maximizing external funding opportunities. The report being put to the committee presents a summary of the work to date and represents the next phase of work. If approved, it will significantly enhance sporting facilities in our area and further improve parks and play areas.”
