Portakabin delivers ‘Dairy Nexus’ innovation hub at SRUC Barony Campus

Portakabin has officially opened the Dairy Nexus, a state-of-the-art research and innovation facility constructed at Scotland’s Rural University and College (SRUC) Barony Campus near Dumfries.

Delivered in partnership with SRUC, the project is the first in Scotland to be completed under the Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal, supported by both the UK and Scottish Governments.

Built by Portakabin in collaboration with Oberlanders Architects, the Dairy Nexus represents a multi-million-pound investment to advance dairy sustainability, productivity, and decarbonisation. The project includes £4 million each from the UK and Scottish Governments, with an additional £738,000 provided by South of Scotland Enterprise (SOSE).

Located in one of the UK’s key dairy regions, Dumfries and Galloway and Cumbria, the Nexus is set to become a focal point for collaborative research between scientists, farers, advisors, and industry stakeholders.

Designed using advanced modular construction techniques, the facility was delivered efficiently and with minimal environmental impact. It includes modern laboratories, high-specification technical equipment, and versatile spaces to support the next generation of dairy research.

The work carried out at the Dairy Nexus will tackle challenges ranging from improving milk quality and nutrition to exploring genetic innovations to reduce cows’ methane emissions which contributes to the UK’s Net Zero initiative and Scotland’s Green Industrial Strategy.

James Pearson, divisional managing director at Portakabin, said: “ At Portakabin, we are committed to delivering high-performance, adaptable buildings that address real-world challenges. The Dairy Nexus exemplifies this mission. Through innovative and modular construction, we’ve created a dynamic space for ground-breaking research that supports sustainable growth and environmental responsibility across the UK dairy industry.”

The aesthetic of the Dairy Nexus complements its rural surroundings, with an olive-green cladded exterior, wooden planters, and decking that harmonise with the landscape. Internally, the facility features natural wood finishes and green tones to create a bright, high-tech research environment.

Professor Wayne Powell, principal and chief executive of SRUC, added: “This is a proud moment for all involved in the Dairy Nexus. It represents SRUC’s commitment to innovative, place-based transformation and supports our ongoing mission to enable a green recovery in Scotland’s rural economies.”

As part of the broader Digital Dairy Chain, the Dairy Nexus will also help foster digital connectivity and attract new skills and talent to the region. At the opening ceremony, visitors toured the Milk Technology Unit used for dairy product testing and met Hilda, the dairy calf who gained global attention as part of the UKRI-funded “Cool Cows” project, a key example of how this facility brings research to life.

The facility was officially opened on Thursday, 3 April by Kristy McNeill, UK Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Scotland, and Tom Arthur, Scottish Minister for Employment and Investment. The ministers unveiled a commemorative plaque and toured the new laboratories, marking the completion of a vital national hub for sustainable dairy innovation.
