Family-owned Marshall Construction posted a jump in turnover in its latest financial year, but this failed to fall to the bottom line as costs also increased.

The Daily Record has reported that Alloa-based firm, which operates in contracting and civil engineering across six divisions, posted a near-50 per cent rise in revenues for the year to July 2016. In total, it generated turnover of £49.5m, up from £33.2m previously.

But pre-tax profits fell to £311,000, down from £437,000 the year before, amid increases in the cost of sales and administrative expenses. Interest payments also moved against the company’s favour.

Founded in 1983 by John Marshall, the company is today run by his son Robert, who took over ownership in 2001.

Among its recent projects, Marshall was involved in the £1.1m makeover of Glasgow’s Springfield Quay, as well as a retail project in Livingston for Henry Boot Developments and affordable housing developments in Dundee.

The company is currently working on a care home in Cramond, Edinburgh on behalf of Walker Healthcare, after securing a competitive tender for the £7.4m contract.

According to accounts filed with Companies House, Marshall employed an average of 289 people through the year under review.
