Purpose-built student accommodation plan unveiled for Broomielaw
Student accommodation developer and operator Valeo Management Europe has outlined its intentions to bring forward plans for a mixed-use development that will deliver approximately 500 new student rooms, and ground floor commercial, on Carrick Street Broomielaw in Glasgow city centre.
If consented and built, the site will be operated by the operating arm of Valeo, LIV Student.
This brownfield site is currently home to the vacant headquarters of GAP Group and plans are designed to complement the ongoing wider regeneration of the River Clyde Waterfront.
As well as student accommodation, a flexible commercial unit is also proposed to serve the new and growing community in Broomielaw. The proposal will also retain, and integrate into the design, the modern Glasgow City Mission building which had been earmarked for demolition as part of previous plans for a new office development on the site.
The proposals will also go some way to addressing the shortfall in student beds in the city, after a recent study found that Glasgow has the largest imbalance between supply and demand for PBSA accommodation in the UK.
A Proposal of Application Notice (PAN) has been submitted to Glasgow City Council, kickstarting the 12-week minimum pre-application statutory consultation period. The first of two consultation events will take place on 18 June 2024 from 3pm to 7pm at Box Hub on Washington Street.
David Saunders, managing director, Valeo Management Europe, said: “We are delighted to bring forward plans for new purpose-built student accommodation in Glasgow City Centre.”
“The Broomielaw and wider River Clyde Waterfront is undergoing significant transformation, and we hope that our plans will go somewhere to supporting this transition as well as providing much needed student rooms in Glasgow.
“We look forward to engaging with local residents and other interested parties over the coming months as we develop our exciting new plans for Carrick Street.”
Both events will be held between 3pm and 7pm at Box Hub on Washington Street. Full details of the proposals will be available to view on the project website.
