Quantity surveyor memorialised in new Golspie housing scheme

A quantity surveyor with the Highland Council who passed away in 2018 has been memorialised in a new social housing scheme in Golspie.

Family members of late Golspie locals Campbell Port and Hamish Campbell were welcomed to the handover of Campbell Close, built by Highland-based Capstone Construction Ltd.

Cllr Richard Gale, the Highland Council’s Sutherland area committee chair, said: “It was a real pleasure to be there and to mark the opening of this new housing development and at the same time pay tribute to two sadly missed members of the Golspie community.

“Both Hamish and Campbell made a significant contribution to village life, and it is good that we can honour their memory in this way.”

Campbell Port, a quantity surveyor with the Highland Council, moved to Golspie with his family in 1988. He served on the Community Council and many club committees including Sutherland Sports Council. Campbell was a keen sailor, part of the Golspie Rowing Club which he helped establish in 2014.

Golspie-born Hamish was a dedicated member of the community serving for 43 years as the local fish merchant. Known for his welcoming smile and friendly manner, he was also an accomplished piper who loved playing music, and was part of the Caledonian Pipe Band for over 40 years.

Both much loved and missed members of the community, the Highland Council said it is “honoured to name the new housing scheme in their memory”.

The properties are the first Highland Council new build social housing properties in Golspie for 30 years and include a total of 20 new homes, seven two-bed four-person villas, three three-bed four-person villas, two four-bed seven-person, four two-bed three-person bungalows and four one-bed two-person cottage flats.

Cllr Glynis Campbell Sinclair, housing and property committee chair, said: “It is wonderful to see this much needed housing development in Golspie completed.

“The Council are committed to improving the availability of affordable housing across Highland and this project delivers a wide range of different sized properties to meet the needs of the community.

“It is a fitting tribute for the development to be named after stalwarts of the community and leave a lasting legacy of their commitment to the area.”
