Stan McGill, who turned a small Dundee electrical firm into one of Scotland’s top 500 companies has announced that he is to retire after 34 years in the trade.

Mr McGill founded McGill as a small electrical outfitter with his elder brother David in 1981.

The pair, as finance director and managing director respectively, have since grown the company into a major multi-trade organisation employing more than 400 staff across its offices in Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

The company now turns over more than £38 million.

Mr McGill took over as MD in 2010 when his brother retired and the company was recognised by PwC in January this year, coming in at 458 in its list of Scotland’s top 500 companies.

Mr McGill yesterday welcomed his successor Colin Low to his new job.

He said: “Colin has been a great asset to our business since he joined 10 years ago and I am confident that his drive, commitment, passion and enthusiasm will lead the company to even greater successes.”

Mr Low is a time-served electrician and served his apprenticeship with DH Morris & Co in Dundee.

He later moved to NG Bailey & Co where he became a senior contracts manager and ran the firm’s Dundee branch for a decade.

He joined McGill’s in 2005 and was promoted to operations director (M&E) in 2007.
