The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) has announced the names of four new Honorary Fellows in recognition of their significant contribution to Scotland’s cultural, academic, business, or political life.

Through their different roles, the 2024 RIAS Honorary Fellows have all made a positive impact on architecture and the built environment in Scotland – whether through support for RIAS members, as a client, as an elected representative, or as a lawyer. All have been recognised for their dedication to the built environment in Scotland, and for using their skills and influence to support all those who work to create well-designed buildings and places.

The new RIAS Honorary Fellows are:

Holly Bruce

Councillor Holly Bruce was elected to Glasgow City Council in 2022, becoming one of the youngest women to serve on the council. She represents the Scottish Greens and is vice-chair of the Environment and Liveable Neighbourhoods Committee. Holly is an intersectional feminist activist, who played a key part in the 2021 Young Women Lead research project – Glasgow: A Feminist City? – and in 2022 successfully lobbied her colleagues to commit Glasgow City Council to embed a feminist town planning approach into its city development plan.

Gary Jebb FRICS

Gary Jebb is the former Director of Place at the University of Edinburgh, having initially joined the University as Director of Estates in 2014. He has considerable experience in the delivery of estates projects and facilities management, together with the development of strategic estate proposals. Under his leadership, the University of Edinburgh worked with around 50 different architectural practices in any given year, and his work translating the University’s academic vision into reality includes the redevelopment of the Edinburgh Futures Institute. Gary also sits on the board of Historic Environment Scotland.

Maryse Richardson

Maryse Richardson worked for the RIAS for 20 years, leading the Practice Department and RIAS flagship Practice Services for 10 years. After working in education, translation and business support administration, she joined the RIAS in 2003. She supported the important work of RIAS committees, working closely with its convenors and developing support for RIAS practices.

Jennifer Young

Jennifer Young is managing partner of Ledingham Chalmers and a leader in the field of construction law. She has particular expertise in construction dispute management and resolution, and regularly advises on high value contractual and building defect claims. She is Chair of CBI Scotland, a member of YPO (Young Presidents’ Organisation), convenor of the Law Society of Scotland’s construction law accreditation panel, Secretary of Lawyers Associated Worldwide and sits on the board of Aberdeen-based charity Charlie House.

Karen Anderson PRIAS, president of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland, said: “I am delighted to welcome our new Honorary Fellows as valued members of the RIAS.  I would like to congratulate them and also thank them for their work in support of our mission to promote the value of well-designed buildings and places in Scotland.”
