This term, pupils across primary 1-4 have been learning about ways different people around the world live, different jobs that people can do related to house building, the different materials used and how homes are actually created and built.

The pupils were keen to bring their learning to life and with Stewart Milne Homes currently building locally, a field trip to the Silver Birches community was arranged, much to the excitement of the children.

During the trip, the children learned about how the homes are built and what materials are used and why. Pupils were able to tour some of the new houses and also visited the selection centre so they could see the process homeowners get to go through to complete their dream property.

Kerry Porter, acting head teacher at Tough Primary, said: “The pupils found their trip to Stewart Milne Homes’ Silver Birches community incredibly interesting. They loved hearing about all the different types of jobs involved in house building, touring the showhome and understanding all the different choices that people have to make when choosing their new home and they especially liked seeing the materials used and what walls look like on the inside.

“The fact that they often pass the development when going to their activities at Alford Campus made it more meaningful to them as Silver Birches is part of their local community. The children also really liked hearing that Stewart Milne himself went to Tough Primary, just like them. I think the trip may have inspired some of the children to follow in his footsteps.”

The children really loved learning about all of the materials and by the sounds of it, we may have even met some of our future apprentices.”
