Scottish Water invests in apprenticeships
Scottish Water is building for the future of the water industry in Scotland and looking to recruit another 40 apprentices in 2016.
The company currently employs 96 apprentices at the moment covering a multitude of diverse job roles from civil engineering, electrical and mechanical engineering, finance and accountancy, procurement, water science, media and creative industries, water and wastewater processes and customer service, to name just a few.
Already formally recognised with the accolade of an Investor in Young People by Investors in People Scotland, the public utility is investing further still in the development of the next generation of water industry technicians, engineers and scientists.
Scottish Water regards this as part of an overall strategy to ensure it has the talent, people and skills needed to deliver improvements to customer service and future investment in Scotland’s water infrastructure – for example the £3.5 billion investment programme which is being delivered between 2015 and 2021.
Apprentices have been an integral part of the success of Scottish Water’s journey since it was formed in 2002.
Apprenticeship programmes at Scottish Water typically run for four years with some of their more advanced technical apprenticeships lasting for five years due to the quality of the training on offer and the advanced qualifications and awards that these contain.
In 2015, Scottish Water won the award of Scotland’s Best Large Employer with Business Insider and Hudson, receiving external recognition for their commitment to creating a highly engaged workforce, opportunities for all, work life balance and having strong values and ethics.
Paul Campbell, organisational learning lead for Scottish Water, said: “Our apprentices are absolutely vital to the future of our business. Any apprentice who joins the Scottish Water team can expect to receive the very highest quality of training and support to help them to grow and realise their potential. As a recognised investor in young people we have worked with a range of skills and educational partners to create qualifications, structured pathways, modern apprenticeships and numerous other opportunities to facilitate entry routes into our industry.”
Shirley Campbell, director of people, workplace and organisational development, added: “Our employee engagement levels are among the highest in the UK and we have an inclusive work environment where we respect and value diversity. We would welcome applications from everyone and we are extremely keen to see even more young women applying to enter into our apprenticeship programmes this year.”
