Second family tragedy as construction director dies in tractor accident

An Aberdeenshire contractor has died following an accident involving a tractor – just five years after his brother was killed by a combine harvester at the same farm.

Neil Ironside, director of construction company KW Contractors, died on his family farm on Saturday, November 10.

Second family tragedy as construction director dies in tractor accident

KW Contractors has carried out construction and civil engineering contracts across Aberdeenshire

Police, ambulance and fire crews were called to the scene at about 11am but the 47-year-old could not be saved.

A police spokeswoman said there are no suspicious circumstances and added that the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has been informed.

The tragedy happened just five years after Mr Ironside’s brother, Alan, died after being dragged into a combine harvester at the farm.

The local community described it as an “absolute tragedy” as they paid tribute to the father and husband.

Turriff councillor Iain Taylor, who knows the family, said: “The family lost another son in other tragic circumstances five years ago,” he said.

“We are absolutely shell-shocked and that’s how they must be feeling.

“He had a successful business in Aberdeen and my understanding was he coming back to the family farm. Sad is not the word, it’s tragic.

“It’s absolutely horrendous. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family.”

A police spokeswoman said: “We were called to a farm in the Fisherie area of Turriff in relation to the sudden death of a 47-yearold man at around 11am on Saturday, November 10.

“There are no suspicious circumstances. Police are liaising with the Health and Safety Executive and as with all sudden deaths a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.”

An HSE spokeswoman added: “HSE is aware of the incident and supporting Police Scotland who are leading the investigation.”

KW Contractors work in a variety of projects – such as school upgrades across Aberdeenshire and for the oil and gas sector.
