Seventeenth century Dundee castle up for sale
A rare opportunity to acquire an A-listed 17th century castle with links to some of Scotland’s most renowned royals is being offered by Thorntons.
Powrie Castle, one of five remaining castles in Dundee, has come on to the market following extensive renovations by the current owners over the last 33 years, which has transformed it into a unique yet welcoming home.
Situated three miles from Dundee, Powrie Castle is thought to be the oldest inhabited residence in Dundee. Its history can be traced back more than 850 years, when the land was gifted by King William in 1170, and its grounds include a scheduled monument, The Keep, which dates back to the 16th century.
Over the past 50 years the main 17th century building has undergone extensive conversion and restoration to create a beautifully presented, award-winning home incorporating remarkably preserved Mediaeval and Renaissance features.
Sitting amid generous lawns, the castle’s turrets, leaded glass windows with shutters, and finely crafted stonework make a striking first impression.
At the heart of the home is an impressive 325 sq ft drawing room, featuring a high vaulted ceiling and arranged around an imposing stone hearth. Designed to be a space for entertaining or just relaxing, it is complemented by a magnificent formal dining room with flagstone flooring, a stunning inglenook fireplace and an oak beamed ceiling.
The castle’s former bakery has been converted into a characterful dining kitchen, complete with a stone vaulted ceiling, bread oven and Aga range cooker.
Its three double-sized bedrooms include the grand laird and lady’s bedroom, which incorporates an open fireplace and a barrel-vaulted ceiling, an en-suite shower room, and enjoys far-reaching views from three windows. Accessed from the Laird and Lady’s bedroom is the Tower Room, currently used as a study, with stairs to the Turret Room; offering a tranquil space that has previously been used as an art room.
Powrie Castle’s origins can be traced from 1172, when King William the Lion gifted the land to Robert Ogilvie, the Earl of Angus. Since then, the stewardship of the property has been dominated by two families: the Ogilvies and the Fotheringhams. Owning the castle for around 600 years between them, the families were actively involved in the politics and conflicts of the late Middle Ages, Renassiance and the Age of Discovery. Letters show their correspondence with key royal figures including Mary Queen of Scots.
On sale for offers over £625,000 and suitable as a family home, holiday home or investment, it is anticipated that Powrie Castle will attract interest from a wide range of prospective buyers.
David Fletcher, property manager at Thorntons, said: “Powrie Castle is a rare opportunity to own a beautifully renovated castle, with links to some of Scotland’s noted royal figures and significant historic events.
“Despite its grand connections, it is a remarkably comfortable and enchanting home that offers great flexibility. The Tower and Turret rooms could be converted into two further bedrooms, which would be especially suitable for children, and its large formal dining and drawing rooms are the perfect spaces for entertaining.
“Just three miles to Dundee, which has excellent road, rail and air links, and close to world-classing golfing at St Andrews and Carnoustie, Powrie Castle is sure to attract interest from a wide range of buyers.”
