Sir Robert McAlpine set to kick off charity tournament in Glasgow for Maggie’s
As part of its commitment to raise £1 million for Maggie’s cancer centres throughout Scotland over the next ten years, Sir Robert McAlpine is hosting its inaugural charity football event for companies.
The five-a-side event for footie-loving firms, which runs on Saturday June 2 in partnership with Glasgow Sport, will be hosted at the state-of-the-art Glasgow Green facility in the city.
After the success of its internal charity football match in 2017, sustainability manager John Logan decided to build a bigger and more inclusive event primarily aimed at raising funds and awareness to support the work of Maggie’s.
John decided that widening the event out to local businesses would create a bigger impact in terms of funds raised along with engaging positively with the local business community.
He said: “We wanted the event to be as inclusive and as diverse as possible, not just restricted to construction. Our event partners, Business Fives and Glasgow Sport have diverse networks and contacts, and the aim of the event is to promote what Maggie’s provides to centre visitors to as many people as possible while raising funds and having some fun.”
The tournament, which is being supported by corporate sports organisers Business Fives, is now open for entries with all proceeds going to support the work of Maggie’s.
The event will be one for the whole family to enjoy with activities for kids throughout the day whilst the adults get down to business on the football pitches.
The main aim of the day is to raise awareness within the local community of the fantastic work Maggie’s is involved in throughout Scotland.
Maralyn Boyle, partnerships manager Scotland, said: “We are very grateful to Sir Robert McAlpine for their ongoing support, Glasgow Sport for providing a wonderful venue and to Business Fives for making this such a successful event. Companies taking part will help to fund Maggie’s Centres - unique and uplifting places where people affected by cancer and their friends and family can get emotional, practical and social support. Our eight Maggie’s Centres across Scotland rely completely on voluntary donations, so your support is greatly appreciated.”
It will even have some famous ex-players and sporting celebrities coming along to support the event and some exciting announcements on this front will be revealed in the coming weeks.
Chris Weitz, senior sports development officer for Glasgow Sport, said: “We’re happy to do our part in supporting such an important charity. Maggie’s Centres play such an important role in communities across Glasgow and the whole of the country – so it really is a wonderful cause to get behind.”
Tournament organiser and Business Fives managing director, John McClarey, said: “We’re really excited to be involved in this ambitious event and with a knowledge of the work of Maggie’s, it’s a fantastic cause to support. The event will be a fun day out for all the participants with the tournament having a graded system to keep all the teams involved with something to play for but the main thing is that the charity will benefit from everyone’s efforts both on and off the pitch.”
The tournament is now open for entries and to register a team please get in touch with Marty McGreechin at m.mcgreechin@srm.com.
