South Ayrshire Council set to exceed social housing targets, SHIP reveals
South Ayrshire Council and its partners are likely to deliver 176 new affordable homes this year - exceeding the target set in October last year by 41 homes.
The figures are set out in the council’s Strategic Housing Investment Plan (SHIP) which notes the council’s affordable housing investment priorities and outlines how government targets will be delivered locally.
Key to exceeding targets has been a number of council-delivered housing developments. The Mainholm site in Ayr is one of the largest affordable housing projects in Scotland and is currently nearing completion. It will deliver 160 new homes with around six being fully wheelchair accessible.
Riverside Place in Ayr will deliver 75 homes, with approximately five meeting wheelchair-accessible standards and in Prestwick, 42 homes will be built at the site of the former St Ninians primary school. Six of these units will be accessible to wheelchair users.
Partners are also contributing towards local social housing targets with Ayrshire Housing, West of Scotland Housing Association, and Hannover Scotland all scheduled to deliver affordable housing over the next five years.
These housing projects and others will help the council meet the overall target of delivering 879 affordable homes by 2028.
Councillor Martin Kilbride, Buildings, Housing and Environment Portfolio Holder for South Ayrshire Council said: “Exceeding our affordable housing target is a great achievement. The success is all the more remarkable given the reduction in our affordable housing supply program budget received from the Scottish Government.
“While our three biggest developments are in Ayr and Prestwick, we’re working with partners to deliver affordable homes in more rural communities like Tarbolton and Monkton.
“We pride ourselves on our social housing programme which is high quality, sustainable and far-reaching. We will continue to work with our partners to build housing which meets the needs of tenants.”
