Andrew Carr aged 20, is a first year apprentice bricklayer and works at Springfield’s South Glassgreen development in Elgin while third year bricklaying apprentice, Jordan Mackenzie aged 21, is based at Knockomie Braes in Forres.

The bricklaying duo were selected by UHI Moray to take part in the competition, considered to be one of the largest and longest running multi-trade competitions in the UK for construction apprentices and learners.

Those selected to partake in the regional qualifier, the first step in the competition, will need to complete a range of tasks and activities with others in their trade as part of a one-day event taking place 25 May in Barnsley.

The top eight from each discipline will then qualify to compete at the SkillBuild National Final in Milton Keynes later this year.

Andrew said: “As a first-year apprentice, I really wasn’t expecting to be selected to compete in SkillBuild this year – I was definitely shocked! It’ll be a good opportunity to challenge myself and put what I’ve learned during my Springfield apprenticeship so far to the test.”

Jordan, from Forres, said: “I am excited for the competition. I’m going to give it my all and see how it goes! It’ll be good to meet other bricklaying apprentices from across the country. I’m especially keen to see how other people go about the job and hoping to increase my experience and pick up a few new tricks of the trade.”

Springfield managing director (North), Dave Main, said: “Supporting the next generation of skill trades within the construction industry is a crucial part of our ethos at Springfield and we are absolutely delighted that two of our apprentices have been invited to take part in such an esteemed skills competition.

“We understand the importance of apprenticeships, giving the next generation of construction workers a blend of classroom theory with on the job learning alongside those who are experts in their trade.

“We’re very excited for Andrew and Jordan and looking forward to seeing how they get on later this month.”

The winners will be published online at the end of the month.
