Springfield Properties has vowed to carry on with its bid to bring hundreds of new homes to Dundee despite a decision by councillors to block one half of its planned development.

The developer had to submit two applications for the proposed £150 million Dundee Western Gateway village as it spans land owned by two different parties. Both applications were recommended for approval by city development director Mike Galloway but the city council only approved one of the submissions.

Sandy Adam, chairman of Springfield Properties, said work could start on the approved plans early next year.

He said: “This is a very exciting time for Springfield. We are delighted with the decision. We are looking forward to making a start on the development in early 2015 so that people in Dundee can benefit from our Springfield Choices and our unique approach to house building.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for Springfield, one we are very excited about. Whilst we are disappointed we didn’t get planning for both applications, we are dedicated to working with Dundee Council to address points raised by the elected members and bring the full village planned for Dykes of Gray to fruition.”

Speaking to The Courier, Mr Adam said he could take the matter as high as the Scottish Government.

He said: “We will just have to revisit the first application because last night was a bit of an anomaly. I’ve been to a lot of planning meetings in my time so I’m never surprised by what goes on, but it was bizarre that the part which was rejected contained the community facilities.”

He added: “We are absolutely committed to Dundee. As I said at the meeting, we’re going ahead with the Swallow roundabout plans and we’ll be putting in the utilities and services for the site we have approval on. We’re making progress and I’m sure we’ll get it rectified in time.

“We’ll take stock over the Christmas holidays.”
