Story Scotland 'opens new chapter' with launch of energy division

Alan Boyle

Story Scotland has launched a new division designed to deliver innovative and efficient civil engineering solutions for energy customers across Scotland.

The move, which coincides with the opening of a new office in Perth, with another planned for Inverness in the next 12-18 months, comes in response to the growing demand for sustainable infrastructure and energy services - a development Story hopes has the potential to establish the firm as a key player in Scotland’s transition to net zero.

The division will be led by Alan Boyle, who brings over 30 years of industry experience to the role, including extensive expertise in sector diversification and sustainable business growth. Well-connected throughout Scotland’s supply chain and customer base, Alan is a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers, and has over 12 years’ experience at director level and a proven track record of leading award-winning teams and delivering significant programmes of capital investment.

Commenting on his new role, Alan Boyle said: “Story Scotland has a well-earned reputation as the ‘transportation contractor of choice’ in Scotland. I intend to build on this by leveraging the strength of the Story brand and our capabilities to help support Scotland reach its net-zero ambitions. With a focus on safety, sustainability, and quality, we will deliver efficient, best-value solutions for our customers while developing a high-performing team that thrives in Scotland’s buoyant energy sector. My vision is to create a business that our people are proud to work for, where we leave a lasting legacy in the communities we serve.”

Alan added: “Our investment in this sector is over a 10+ year horizon, and we are in this for the long haul. By taking a collaborative, customer-first approach and empowering our team to be the best they can be, I believe we can make this vision a reality.”

Story Scotland currently has a team of 30 members of staff within the dedicated energy division, and plans to grow the workforce by more than 100 new positions over the next five years, spanning a range of disciplines and experience levels. This expansion will provide opportunities for graduates, apprentices, trainees, and career changers, supporting Scotland’s ambitions to develop skills and create a sustainable future.

The launch follows a decade of success for Story Scotland since the division was founded in 2014. It has since delivered over 500 projects, including award-winning initiatives such as the Ravenscraig railway bridge installation and Invercoe Bridge replacement. The division employs over 230 colleagues, whose commitment to the company motto, ‘Doing it Right!’, has been central to its growth and achievements.

Story Scotland will bring £30 million of civil engineering capacity to the energy market, backed by the company’s expertise in plant operations, geotechnical capability, drone technology, and provision of precision engineering solutions. The team is already working on a range of critical engineering projects, including battery energy storage systems (BESS), pumped hydro, ground-mounted solar PV, windfarm infrastructure, and hydro maintenance.

One of Story Energy’s primary focuses will be transmission upgrades as part of Scotland’s Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment (ASTI) programmes, working with SP Energy Networks (SPEN) and SSEN through their Framework Contractors. These programmes aim to decarbonise Scotland’s grid by 2030, and Story Energy is fully committed to supporting these ambitious goals.

John MacArthur, managing director of Story Scotland, added: “Story Energy (Scotland) is open for business and ready to partner with customers and supply chain partners who share our commitment to the country’s Net-Zero journey. By remaining nimble and responsive to market needs, we can ensure that our energy solutions deliver both innovation and value. The work we are doing now will support the decarbonisation of Scotland’s grid and drive lasting change for the better.”

Building on Story Scotland’s civil engineering expertise, the dedicated energy team provides turnkey solutions tailored to Scotland’s energy needs. These solutions include renewable energy schemes, nuclear infrastructure and hydro projects. The division will continue to work closely with clients to support projects that make a tangible contribution to Scotland’s sustainable future.
