Student digs proposed at C-listed Edinburgh chapel
A listed chapel in Edinburgh is the latest plot earmarked for student residential development in the capital.
About this development:
- Authority:Edinburgh City
- Type:Residential, Education
- Applications:
- Team:S1 Developments (developer), Comprehensive Design Architects (architect)
S1 Developments Group will work with CDA Architects to convert the C-listed St Joseph’s Nursing Home at Gilmore Place into 230 beds for students at the University of Edinburgh.
Under the plans, the main listed building will be sympathetically restored, while the site’s extension and outbuilding will be removed to enable the insertion of three new accommodation blocks forming a new courtyard.
A new glass colonnade will be inserted to the rear of the main building to serve as a direct link between ground-floor amenity and the interior courtyard.
Confirming their design approach CDA wrote: “To ensure the feasible redevelopment of the existing building, a couple of understated extensions are proposed to align the proposal with modern-day building standards.
“Separating the new build into three blocks breaks up a larger block form into a more ‘domestic’ scale of development for ease of maintenance and provides glimpses through to the southern boundary of the site.”
