- Type:Commercial, Leisure
- Applications:
- Team:Stallan-Brand (architect)
The new landmark, which council planners said has the potential to set a new standard for tall buildings in Glasgow, will deliver 142 rooms at the corner of Eastvale Place and Sandyford Street near the SWG3 campus.
Set to include a cafe/bar on the ground floor, a gym with a sauna and steam room, meeting rooms and a function suite, the multi-purpose hotel is the culmination of almost 20 years of investment in the local area, and will cater for the renowned programme of events at SWG3 and beyond, while creating more than 100 new jobs.
SWG3 founding partners Andrew Fleming-Brown and Andrew Mickel, alongside hotelier Bruce Robertson and award-winning architectural practice Stallan-Brand are the visionaries behind the project.
Paul Stallan, Stallan-Brand creative director, said: “Whilst the SWG3 Hotel is strategically situated to support the immediate regeneration initiative, the hotel will also contribute to the ongoing success of Glasgow’s ‘Hydro Effect’ which has seen the city become a global magnet for major music and conference events. As a ‘hotel for music lovers’, the SWG3 team are excited to expand their programme with a new leisure offer that will ensure they remain more visible, vital and circular.”
In a report presented to city councillors recommending the application is approved, planners said: “The building would be a new landmark and has the potential to set a new standard for tall buildings in Glasgow. Overall, it is considered that the design of the building, internal offer and relationship with the public realm would be of outstanding quality.
“The conversion of the former industrial buildings along Eastvale Place over recent years into an indigenous arts, entertainment and leisure complex has been a Glaswegian success story. The hotel is the next chapter in this development and will complement and support the existing uses on the SWG3 campus ensuring its ongoing success.
“As a bold visual statement of the aspirations of SWG3 it will be a landmark building that helps to connect The Clyde to West End and SWG3 to Finnieston. Along with the Connect Yorkhill [active travel] works due to be undertaken by the council, the new gateway building and its public square will bring life and vitality, enhancing movement and improving accessibility in the area.”
