Three arrested as police seize £200,000 of drugs in City Building van raid

According to an official police statement, officers detained and arrested the two occupants of the van on suspicion of drug dealing, before stopping another vehicle and also detaining and arresting its driver.

Police said the operation was carried out with the support of Glasgow City Council, which owns and runs City Building, and was understood to focus on the distribution of amphetamines across north Glasgow.

However, it has also been reported that one of the men in the City Building van was Michael McKenna, 24, an electrician for the construction firm but also the stepbrother of the partner of Paul Carey, the Labour councillor who until late last year chaired City Building.

The reports state that Mr MeKenna has since resigned his post and there is no suggestion Mr Carey or his partner had any involvement in the incident or any of the matters under investigation.

The councillor is quoted as saying: “I don’t know anything about it.”

Police said that no-one was hurt in the dramatic stopping of the City Building vehicle, which authorities said was damaged but not written-off in the bumper-to-bumper collision at 8pm on April 13 in Barmulloch, north Glasgow.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “On April 13, 2015, at around 8pm, as part of a police investigation, a vehicle was stopped on Sheila Street in Glasgow.

“The occupants were detained and taken to Stewart Street Police Office.

“At the same time, another vehicle was stopped on Springburn Road, the occupant was detained and taken to Stewart Street Police Office. Detailed searches of the vehicles were conducted at Stewart Street where officers recovered quantities of cocaine, diamorphine and amphetamine with an estimated potential street value of £200,000.

“A 24-year-old, 31-year-old and 42-year-old man were later arrested for alleged drugs offences and held in custody for court.”

A council spokesman said: “We are aware a City Building vehicle was involved in a police incident on April 13. It would be inappropriate for us to comment further on ongoing legal proceedings.”
